Save the Children fights for children in the UK and around the world who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence. We work with them to find lifelong answers to the problems they face.

Thanks from Save the Children to all our supporters!

Mike Aaronson, Director General of Save the Children UK said:

“Save the Children UK wants to say a huge thank you to the public for the unprecedented financial donations and the support we have received from people following the Tsunami. The response from the public has been incredible. We now expect that thanks to fundraising activities in the pipeline, the DEC appeal and the money we have already received, we can fulfil our current plans in response to the Tsunami.

At the moment, we are working on immediate needs for children and families in the region. The money raised is funding crucial work including food distribution, medical kits, protecting vulnerable children and provision of household items. We are also putting in place plans to help children and families to rebuild their lives over the next few years and ensuring that we continue our ongoing work with vulnerable children across the whole area.

The response of the public to the Tsunami shows powerfully that people do care about the rest of the world. Save the Children UK works in over 50 countries around the world, including many other emergency situations that have been forgotten. We encourage people who still wish to help further to consider donating to our work in these countries or to join our campaign to make child poverty history in 2005 by logging onto our website www.savethechildren.org.uk.’

Our immediate focus of work following the Tsunami is:

  • preventing further loss of life by distributing food, shelter, household items and water purification material to approximately 100,000 families in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia
  • reunifying separated children and infants with their families
  • preventing children and young people from coming to further harm, through child protection activities and the provision of child-friendly spaces in the areas where displaced families are sheltering.
